Securing 5G Inter-Carrier Roaming: The 3GPP SEPP Architecture, N32 PRINS Protocol, and Hardware Security Modules

A comprehensive engineering evaluation of 5G international roaming vulnerabilities, SEPP design, and hardware-accelerated JSON Web Encryption.

The High Stakes of 5G International Roaming

As 5G networks enable critical applications—autonomous cross-border logistics, connected vehicles, and remote medical consultation—the security of international roaming links becomes critical infrastructure. Traditional roaming vulnerabilities that permitted IMSI-catching and denial-of-service cannot be tolerated in 5G. The 3GPP specified the Security Edge Protection Proxy (SEPP) to terminate all inter-operator traffic.

The Technical Mechanics of Protocol for N32 Interconnect Security (PRINS)

PRINS allows mobile operators to establish end-to-end security while permitting intermediate IPX providers to perform legitimate traffic routing and SLA monitoring. TeleHSM executes PRINS encryption in hardware: data modification policies are negotiated over N32-c, and sensitive fields are encrypted using JWE over N32-f, with cryptographic verification that transit carriers only modify permitted header attributes.

Managing Carrier PKI and Global Trust Anchors

SEPP instances rely on GSMA Root Certificate Authorities to authenticate foreign roaming partners. TeleHSM provides carrier-grade certificate lifecycle management, verifying partner certificate chains and OCSP revocation tokens in under 2 milliseconds.
